The Gotham Jazz Orchestra brings together a stunning all-star amalgam that features saxophonists Tim Ries, Dave Pietro, Charles Pillow, Jon Gordon and Steve Kenyon; trombonists Bruce Eidem, Mark Patterson, Pete McGuinness and Nate Durham; and trumpeters Tony Kadleck, Scott Wendholt, Joe Magnarelli and Craig Johnson. The rhythm section, bedrocked by big band drummer extraordinaire John Riley, boasts guitarist Steve Cardenas, bassist John Hebert and Holober on piano and Fender Rhodes.
Described as “a powerhouse big band” and a “swinging unit,” their first recording, “Thought Trains,” received a 4 star review in Downbeat and was listed as one of the magazine’s outstanding CD’s of 2005. Their second recording, a collection of new compositions entitled “Quake, ” is due for release January 2009 and promises to be an even more “invigorating ride” than the last one.
